Thoughts

Never count the Death Guard out. Just as it seemed like they might be dropping off, Virulent takes another big event win! This is more or less the last build standing, with a decision point to be made over whether Mortarion gets in there alongside his little baby son, the Daemon Prince with the 5+++. Mortarion offers some delicious counter-synergies, with 2+ Fight on Death and a reactive move, and that causes mayhem as opponents attempt to clear Deathshroud, drones, and the Primarch himself from their lines. Still a deadly army in the right hands, well done for demonstrating this!!

Spectacle Wych Rush

Thoughts

Drukhari expert Cody highlights the power of Spectacle, with a build going hard on Wyches and Hellions to exploit charging the opponent in their movement phase. The Drukhari book is struggling overall, but Spite has a unique challenge in the toolkit, and gets the Wych units going fast and punching hard- the way the faction should be. I massively rate what the one Talos unit and triple Scourge gives you as a support base- enough output to genuinely threaten vehicles and big stuff which might otherwise overwhelm the Wych elements. I think this may just emerge as the go-to detachment over the next few weeks. Amazing work Cody!

Final Day Raveners

Thoughts

GSC are casting around for an identity at the moment post-nerfs to Host. Is Final Day the answer? The Benefictus Neophyte unit slaps like old Host, with the ability to relocate and focus damage where you need it. Raveners give you a genuine melee hammer that doesn't need the reroll wounds strat to punch up, and makes your go-turns all that more potent. Throw in the massed denial and blocking of Gargoyles, and you are on to a winner. I am a massive fan of Final Day, a beautifully techy, finesse detachment, and it's awesome to see it hanging at the top here.

Starshatter Wraiths

Thoughts

Starshatter continues to duck and weave, applying excellent ranged shooting behind a Wraith spoiler block. In a very diverse metagame it has a genuine role, though you have to use every component part carefully. It can grind down and body any army that misjudges it's plays into the Wraiths, helped along by the reactive move stratagem available here after being shot. An enduring build, from a truly enduring codex. Excellent work on the top placing.

Thoughts

BA master Georgios claims an event win with tried and tested Liberator Assault Group. BA punch hard and fast, and have some lovely fight phase control options to help them get the job done in melee games. The Sanguinor makes life hell for small elf trading units (not like there's many of those about right? Right?!) and I like the Baal for a control lane and Lancers for honesty. A beautifully balanced list that takes skillful piloting to get the most from -just as it should be. Congratulations on the 1st place finish!

Triple Despoiler? I Barely Know Her!

Thoughts

CK lurk as the last truly great 'big skew mech list' of the current field. The Gatling Knights just absolutely slay infantry armies, and there is so much stuff to throw out ahead of them whilst they table the opponent. Infernal is the way for CK at the moment, and if they can duck and weave one or two match ups they remain an utterly ruthless top list. Fantastic work on the top placing.

Thoughts

Castigators, Vahl, and the speedy punch of assault weaponry across an army with access to miracle dice for their advance roles. Even the slightest misplays can be punished viciously, and Bringers is back with a vengeance and ready to take on the meta. The Dialogus is wonderful tech which allows you to essentially un-shock a unit that falls out of a transport to threaten an overwatch or intervention for primary play. Wonderful work on the top placing!

Thoughts

An intriguing match up here, as the new release of the Drukhari throws down with the long established meta menace of the Dark Angels Gladius. The DA have skewed hard intto vehicles here in line with recent trends, packing Redemptors in, with a brick of Inner Circle Companions in support. Spectacle is a little vulnerable to mech skew at times, so this gives them some ins, but that's where the slight alterations on some of the Spectacle lists we have seen so far come in.

Hellions and Wyches appear here as you'd expect, to exploit A Challenge Met, and charge the opponent in their own movement phase to open up counter-attacks. But the list also has Scourge, and, crucially, an Archon venom, which gives it a bit of focused anti-vehicle damage (Dark Lances, free Grenades, and the dev wounds of the Archon himself) that can, in theory, be recycled multiple time. That makes whittling down and picking off the Dreadnoughts a lot easier, and then the DA infantry is running into the awful power of the challenge met stratagem. Gladius has all the basic tools, but it doesn't have anything quite as dishonest as that, and it looks like it carried the day!

A Spectacular (hehe) event win for the Wych Cults, who have always stood out as the most competitively dynamic of the new Drukhari detachments, with a unique challenge posed, and loads of very relevant buffs for helping the Dark Eldar cover the board and make trouble. This list brings along some of the standard Incubi / Scourge and Archon tricks to supplement what you do with the Wyches - I think this makes it more flexible into a wide range of games, and it's exactly how I run mine - you're a man of taste Trenton. It's not easy out there for the Drukhari right now, so very well done bringing home the event win!!

Don't worry guys, I know you were starting to wonder if the Eldar would catch a break and win another event this week. They have! This list takes a big brick of Banshees - I like this for causing a heroic threat that can't be quite as easily nullified, and for whomping World Eater 20 mans when called upon. Business as usual across the board otherwise, but it's cool to see a Wayleaper for plugging in to the Spiders, and Baharroth making the cut too! There are many ways to slice Aspect Host right now. Great work on the event win.

With careful set up, these can be hard to interact with and maintain no-go areas of the board. Custodes are in an interesting spot where they seem to be popping up fairly consistently, but the full event wins are rare, and that makes this worthy of comment. Amazing work!

3rd - Ben Tatti - Space Marines (Astartes) (Forgefather's Seekers): Mixed arms Salamanders with Redemptors, Gladiator Valiants, and Bladeguard.
4th - Jonah Sinclair - Astra Militarum (Hammer of the Emperor): An absolute wall of Leman Russ variants in Hammer, and some cheeky Ratlings.
5th - Adam Kleparchuk - Space Marines (Astartes) (Forgefather's Seekers): Another Sallies list! This time with a Land Raider Redeemer.
6th - Thomas Berry - Necrons (Awakened Dynasty): A quite unique horror of a list with THIRTY Lychguard in Awakened. Glorious.

Wrap Up

There you have it folks - balanced meta is balanced. We've got Death Guard popping up again, Lions Custodes taking a win, and a huge diversity of armies popping up around the top placings. There remains a few outliers, but the overall game health is quite reassuring as we head into Christmas. Will the Ultramarines have anything to say about that? Time will tell ;)
