A Note On Cancon 2023
A giant tournament in Australia that was using a bespoke matching system Stats and Ladders... which as of this article writing is returning server errors and is inaccessible. Over 200 players were present and here was the top 10:I would love to go into more detail and present a showdown for this tournament, though sadly as all the data is currently inaccessible due to the beta site being taken down, we're going to have to skip it for now. For now, keep an eye on this site.
March To War 2023
30-player, 5-round Grand Tournament in England GB on January 21 2023. All the lists for this event can be found in Best Coast Pairings. The Showdown
Matchup & Mission -
Luke Churchus - Underguts: Ironblaster gunline (note tournament used old points, I had to manually recreate this list hence the points count being over)vs.
Mathew Davies - Sylvaneth: Gotrek's woodland walk
Result
Underguts Victory - 28 - 27Thoughts
This result isn't that surprising - Mathew's list foregoes many of the reach elements of a typical tree list in favour of several powerful melee hammers in Gotrek and the Seekers. The problem however is that the Gnoblars present a nightmarish screen to protect the gunline and then one good turn of rolling is all it takes to obliterate Gotrek. The Seekers can escape using Strike and Fade, but likely will take chip damage from the Gnoblars in the process, and it doesn't prevent the Ironblasters from moving into position and blowing them the fuckup in the following turn considering how hard it is to hide 9 giant bugs behind trees.Luke Churchus - Underguts - 1st Place

Dads on tour - gun enthusiast editionThoughts
It's not really a surprise that this list got hit so hard with nerfs in the latest GHB, as it manages to apply a lot of pressure in several phases of the game. It has exceptional shooting output that in many cases is longer range than your opponent's... it has one of the best screens in the game in Gnoblars, that generate value even if they never do anything other than get charged and die thanks to Nasty Traps and Tricks. The Frost Lord presents one of the game's premiere mobile hammer units, that can also act as an anvil in a pinch thanks to the mount trait making it particularly hard to kill (-1 to wound) when combined with it's innate 5+ ward and high save characteristic. Finally, Ogors count as more on objectives, giving them good objective play. Pretty much the only hole in this list is that it doesn't have magic domination elements, which in many matchups won't matter anyway.
The Best of the Rest
There were 3 more players on 4-1 records. They were:- Position - Player Name - Faction:
- 2nd - Mathew Davies - Sylvaneth: See showdown
- 3rd - Nick Thompson - Beasts of Chaos: A greatest hits collection of BoC - Drogors, Enlightened on Discs and Cockatrices
- 4th - Lewis Sloan - Ogor Mawtribes: Four Stonehorns and a Thundertusk represent a lot of meat for your opponent to chew on
Wrap Up
It's looking increasingly likely that Ogors will remain a competitive mainstay even with their significant nerfs in the latest Battlescroll - what do you think? Too much or not enough?Ellarr also has his own Youtube channel to cover other aspects of competitive Age of Sigmar which you can find here.
